Webinar Registration hereAnimals in the Machine: Robotic Animal Agents
Jenn Parker-Starbuck, Royal Holloway, University of LondonBuilding on the work around cyborgs and the non-human “others,” this talk illustrates the development of several types of robotic animals and insects, from animal drones and animal “spys,” to artistic robotic/cyborgean animal installations. My aim is to begin to discern in which cases a possible animal “agency” might provoke a rethinking of the human-technological-animal relationship. Looking specifically at work such as Korean/US artist Doo Sung Yoo’s animal-machine hybrids, biomimetic “mixed societies” of robotic and live cockroaches, and animal drones and automata, this talk examines questions of relationality, and possibilities for how mechanized animals, controlled by humans and, at times, at their least “animal,” might produce a disturbance that provokes possibility as a dissenting agent.

Art&Criticism, vol[57] N.48 Winter 2017
Lee, Sun Young, who is an art critic and awardee of Incentive Prize for Young Critics 2014, International Association of Art Critics (Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art, AICA), critiques Doo-Sung Yoo's artwork in Art & Criticism (ISSUE 48, 2017):
Yoo’s art works articulate the characteristics of animals and machines, which are as distinct as we think, but are immanent in humanity. Animals and machines were considered as ‘the other’ for humanity. Humanity was defined through relationships with ‘the others’. However, following new concepts regarding ‘the other’ in contemporary philosophy, Yoo’s works demonstrate Jacques Derrida’s concept, “the singularity of the Other; they are the same”. One of the motivating powers of Yoo’s works is the concept of Posthumanism (and the concept of reincarnation) that enables humans to expand their ideas. According to traditional Oriental philosophy, a current human being may or may not be a human in the past and future, which amazingly matches with the Posthumanism rejection of the anthropocentric stance. Artist Doo-Sung Yoo considers that animals and machines are immanent within us, while animals and machines used to be regarded as ‘the other’ to establish ‘identity’ for humanity themselves in traditional concepts. Immanence has become both artistic object and the subject of contemporary art.

An interview with Doo-Sung Yoo was involved in the Interview Issue #2 of Antennae: The Journal of Nature in Visual Culture.
Interviewer: Dr. Jennifer Parker-Starbuck|, the author of Cyborg Theatre: Corporeal/Technological Intersections in Multimedia Performance, Professor and Head of School of Perform & Digital Arts, Department of Drama, Theatre and Dance ,Royal Holloway, University of London
“For a long while, Jennifer Parker-Starbuck has been one of the most interesting voices on the international scene of performance and Human Animal Studies. Never shying away from challenging subjects involving experimental approaches to representation, Parker-Starbuck has raised important questions about the role non-human actants play on stage. In this interview she addresses some of these issues through an interview with Korean, new media artist Doo-Sung Yoo whose work prods the boundaries between nature and technology, science and art, human and non-human.”

The Inaugural Performance of Doo-Sung Yoo’s Leech Project was reviewed in NY Arts Magazine"One of the highlights of the opening was Doo-sung Yoo’s untitled performance piece staged near the entrance to the gallery space. Yoo himself was integral to the planning of the exhibition and a well established artist in video production and performance. Much of his work deals with how humans and animals are interconnected and interdependent, and these themes were clearly in mind for his live piece. It was hard not to have a visceral reaction to the work—there was literally a plate of viscera sitting on a table laid out as through at a restaurant, alongside a glass of wine and a loaf of bread..."

"Stanislavski Is Dead And Vishtauroborg Devours, Who Believed Meyerhold?”
by Najar Darinkolae, EsmaeilAbstract : My paper focuses on how Vishtauroborg, an experimental monster/dancer created by one of the Ohio State University's visiting scholars, Doosung Yoo (Department of Art), embodies different aesthetic possibilities via scientific procedure, and how it can build upon the politics of violence by creating a demonic 'Godlike' figure. I will also delineate the line of Vishtauroborg's ancestry to Meyerhold's 'biomechanics' in contrast to Stanislavski's and later practitioners' acting methods and psychological realism.

Doo-Sung Yoo is an American artist who has developed a series of technological augmentations to the human body that involve the mechanical re-animation of inanimate biomaterials, particularly butchered animal organs. His paper traces earlier artistic practices utilizing human / robotics interfaces, as well as other cultural and scientific influences on his artwork. He provides readers with ample visual documentation of his uncannily lush, beautiful, and horrific Butoh Theatre style performances. – Dr. Jennifer Willet

Doo-Sung Yoo's essay has been selected in a new media art journal, ISEA2012 Machine Wilderness: Special Media-N edition - FALL 2013: V.09 N.03"Doo-Sung Yoo experiments with a cyborg reality reminiscent of both dystopia, such as the Farmer’s fictional House of the Scorpion where human clones are farmed to provide donor organs to the supremely wealthy, and utopia, such as MIT’s interactive robot design group where robots help humans stick to exercise routines or resolve conflicts during disasters. Yoo’s experimental reality “improves” on the human body, even as his creations collaborate with human performers and reference emergent complexities." – Catherine Harris, Assistant Professor, Art and Ecology, and Landscape Architecture, The University of New Mexico

I do not believe that technology can solve everything, and there are risks associated with its effects on our mental and physical health. Human beings may encounter the tragedy of genetic catastrophe and the destruction of the human form from the evolutionary decay caused by technology. Or, dominant genes could ultimately choose technology to reconstruct new bodies to survive as the natural selection in the technological evolution." – Doo-Sung Yoo READ MORE
